Not that I know about condo fees, but you live in East Hartford after all (I do too). You are probably the first smart person I know that lives in this forgotten by God town...

This sounds like most condos. Honestly, the way many run is they'll keep the maintenance fee abnormally low. Then when some "big repair" is needed they'll put out a mandatory assessment. By the time you factor in assessments the monthly fee is sometimes easily another $100 or $200. We also kicked our management company to the curb (their initials were DMM in case you wonder). We had similar issues with amounts being spent that seemed way out of line. I'm not sure how big your place is but we only have about 20 units so the owners decided to self manage. We've been at about $350 in monthly fee the last three years. The key is to find vendors that you can work with and stick with them and not change every year just because someone doesn't like that a blade of grass blew on their porch during a mowing (I'm not making that up - wish I were)....

I think it's going to be a lot of work that I have signed up for, but I refuse to bitch, moan, and be generally pissy and vociferous about something needing change and then not doing anything...

Go you! This all sounds like a bunch of work my husband's been doing with our local geek-convention nonprofit... y'know, after we determined that all but one board member had been elected illegally and that the by-laws had redonkulous ambiguities. :)
